Farm Health Check

See your business the way the credit team does.

We take your last three years of financials and work out the ratios a bank uses to decide how risky you are. You get a written report in plain English and an hour on the phone to go through it.

What we look at

Debt and equity first: how much you owe against what the business is worth, how that has moved over three years, and how it compares with what lenders are generally comfortable with.

Then profit and cost. Return on assets, return on equity, operating profit, and the share of income going to inputs, overheads, finance and depreciation. Most important for livestock is cost of production, worked out per kilogram of pork, beef or lamb, or per kilogram of wool.

Last, the ability to pay. Interest cover shows how many times your profit would pay the interest bill, which is the first number many credit managers look at.

Why it matters at the bank

The rate you pay is built from what money costs the bank, plus a margin set by how risky they think you are. That margin is the part you can move. Knowing your ratios before the bank works them out gives you something to talk about other than the rate.

The report also shows where the business is strong. That is often what gets lost when a farm only talks to its bank in a bad year.

How it works

What to expect

Send your statements

Three years of financial statements and your current loan and overdraft details. A herd or flock summary if you have one.

We build the ratios

Usually within ten working days. We'll call if something doesn't add up rather than guess.

You get the report

About six pages, written plainly, with each ratio explained and the three things to look at first.

We go through it

An hour on the phone, or at the kitchen table if Nick is in your area that month.

Who it suits

  • You have a bank review coming and want to know what they'll see
  • You're weighing up a big purchase and want to know if the business can carry it
  • You've never had your numbers looked at from the lender's side

Frequently asked questions

Is the $850 wasted if I then need a full bank pack?

No. If you book a Bank Review Pack or a retainer within 60 days, the whole $850 comes off that fee.

Will you compare me with other farms?

The report shows where your ratios sit against the ranges lenders and farm benchmarking groups commonly use. If you're already in a benchmarking group, we'll use those results too.

Do you need my tax returns?

Financial statements are better. Tax returns help where statements aren't available, but they often hide how the business really runs.
