Restocking budget

How it works

Enter breeder numbers now and your target, the price of bought-in breeders, and your weaning, retention and loss rates. The calculator shows the cash needed to buy in now, how many years breeding up would take, and the income given up by keeping female weaners instead of selling them, year by year.

Your figures stay in this browser. Nothing is sent to Farm CFO or anyone else.

The example is an invented herd rebuilding from 150 to 400 cows: $1,800 a head plus $40 freight to buy in, 85% weaning, half the weaners female, 80% of those kept, 10% yearly deaths and culls, and $900 for a female weaner. Prices are illustrative: check current prices with your agent or MLA.

The working

  • Buy in = (target - breeders now) x (price + freight and buying costs).
  • Each year, females kept = breeders x weaning % x female share x share kept, up to what's needed to reach the target.
  • Breeders at year end = breeders at the start - deaths and culls + females kept, counted as breeders from the next year.
  • Income given up = females kept x the sale value of a female weaner.

Questions

Why is breeding up slower than it looks?

Heifers and maiden ewes need time before they breed, deaths and culls continue, and only some female weaners are good enough to keep. The calculator counts kept females from the next year, which is optimistic for heifers.

Can I do a mix?

Yes, and many people do. Run it with a higher number now, as if you bought some in, to see the effect.
